Crosses and Butterflies are beautiful age-old symbols that attract attention all over the world, (you don’t have to be religious or a lover of nature to appreciate their beauty and form). This particular work was created from several sections of a semi demolished graffiti wall and is clearly more refined in its presentation than the earlier work of the Blue Butterfly. The wings were particularly delicate so I decided to carve them separately to avoid the disappointment of breakage. I chose to position the butterfly centrally to create balance and unity whilst allowing the striking colour differences to define their individuality.
The colour combinations are dependent on the depth of carving and the hidden colours that lay beneath – it was often a challenge to know when to stop carving!
